Automatic gender sorting machine for farmed fish
Our Gender Sorting Machines
Introducing the World’s First Automated Gender Sorting Machine for Farmed Fish!
Our market-leading solution enables you to efficiently gender-sort fish from 20 g up to 500 g, by utilizing a medical ultrasound scanner and AI. Our machines operate at a speed of up to 40,000 fish per hour, significantly streamlining the sorting process at broodstock and hatcheries.
Advantages of Gender-Sorting
Gender-sorting of farmed fish introduces several key advantages for fish farmers, including:
- Significantly increasing the growth rate of both genders.
- Enhancing fish health and welfare.
- Simplifying the monitoring of sexual maturity.
- Optimizing slaughter times of both genders.
- Reducing the time that fish spend at sea.
Additionally, gender-sorting results in a more uniform fish size within each cage, which simplifies production processes across all stages. For further information, please contact Kjersti Jullum.
Two Solutions
Semi-Automatic Gender-Sorting for Salmon Smolt
Our first series of machines are semi-automatic, stand-alone systems where an operator manually feeds the machine with sedated fish. From this point, the machine manages the feeding, automatic scanning, and sorting of fish by gender.
In addition to gender sorting, our technology can detect various health conditions, including different stages of kidney calcification (nephrocalcinosis) and sexual maturation. It can also be used to identify heart and spine deformities.
This solution is patented in Norway, with ongoing patent applications in other markets.
Fully Automatic Gender-sorting and Health Indexing Machine
This next-generation machine is compatible with any vaccination machine on the market. It handles from 5,000 to 40,000 fish per hour and is small and easy to place along the production line. The machine can sort atlantic salmon, trout and coho salmon.
Anesthetized fish from the vaccination machine are transferred into our kit-solution, where they are singulated into a vision system and analyzed for any external deformities or damage.
At the next station, the fish undergo an ultrasound scan to assess internal conditions. The system detects sex, nephrocalcinosis, and early maturation. Finally, the fish are sorted based on sex, size and both external and internal health conditions. Fish found unsuitable for production, are automatically sorted out.
Why Collaborate with GreenFox?

Ultrasound with Medical-Grade Precision and AI Integration
Our patented solution (NO) incorporates multiple advanced technologies, including high-resolution ultrasound with medical-grade quality, and an in-house developed artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm. This combination results in a highly reliable solution, achieving consistent results with an accuracy rate of 96% – 99%.
Proven Commercial Success
Our machines have been in commercial use since 2022, during which we have successfully gender-sorted millions of smolts in Norway, Scotland, Faroe Islands, Chile and France, with consistently excellent results.
Accelerated Growth in Gender-Separated Pens
Ongoing gender-sorting trials indicate that both male and female fish experience faster growth in gender-separated cages. These trials demonstrate a weight increase of approximately 8 % – 10 % for both genders, compared to breeding in traditional gender-mixed cages.
This growth results in reaching the predefined slaughter weight within a shorter period than previously, which applies to both genders, or attaining a higher slaughter weight within the same sea exposure period.
